WORLD HALAL RESEARCH SUMMIT 2010
The World Halal Research Summit (WHRS) 2010 is in her 3rd year gathering speakers and participants from across the globe to present and discuss on new research findings, emerging technologies, trends, issues and challenges in the global Halal industry. The event was held from 23rd to 25th June at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Organized by Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC), this year, the discourse centered on the theme, “Inspiring Innovation Through Halal Research”.
In his message to participants, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak shared Malaysia’s economic aspiration in transforming Malaysia into an advanced nation by 2020. Positioning herself as a Global Halal Hub is one of the strategies towards enhancing the country’s economic growth and elevating the income levels of the Malaysian population. Citing the global Halal market to be worth an approximately US $1.2 trillion, he revealed that Malaysia is committed to develop a thriving and efficient Halal business community in Malaysia. Thus, her approach to develop a “Halal Eco System” in Malaysia towards a Malaysian Halal industry which is sustainable and competitive as well as transforming industrial businesses into value-creating entities.
Most speakers are from the relevant industry in Malaysia and other countries like UK, Netherlands, Germany, Thailand and China. Topics discussed include alternative medicines, Halal logistics and laboratory and testing innovation. Actively discussed presentations include Islamic perspective on use of growth media and animal feed and updates on meat science.
Dr. Mian N. Riaz from Texas A&M University represented USA. Dr. Riaz is also a scientific consultant with Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA). He presented an interesting discussion on the developments of Halal innovation in USA. It was the second time he was invited to speak in this event, which, over the years is gaining prestige.
