In what is touted as a definite first in America, a Super Walmart in Michigan has now started to stock Halal meats. The 200,00 square foot facility in Sterling Heights opened this January 16th and is providing a range of services and products geared towards the multi-cultural communities in the neighborhood, C & G newspapers reported.
Among unique highlights is a 44-foot stretch of Middle Eastern and Eastern European food products supplied by Dearborn-based Tut’s Imports — including tahini, grape leaves, basmati rice and falafel — as well as a section of halal meat blessed by Muslim clerics, said store manager John Johnson.
He said the Shelby Township Wal-Mart debuted the Middle Eastern and Eastern European selections, but the Sterling location has expanded upon it. And as far as Johnson is aware, his Wal-Mart is the only one to offer halal meat.
Several mainstream supermarkets in Canada and UK already carry Halal products.
