An increasing number of US fast food chains are now advertising themselves as selling Halal food. According to the Detroit Press, a KFC in Dearborn began selling 'Halal' chicken last month. Two McDonald's stores, and Big Boy restaurants in the area also claim to sell halal food.
An investigation into the claims a major chain few years ago left much to be desired. The store manager couldn't answer if the same oil is used to fry the 'halal,' and the non-Halal chicken. Subsequent visits to the store revealed that the staff had no clue about Halal practices. The authenticity of the meat itself was in doubt as it was shipped all the way from Alabama and the Muslim contact person, who issued an 'Halal' certificate, said that there were no Muslim slaughterman at the plant.
In their rush to catch the halal gravy train many businesses seem to have forgotten the basics. They will not be able to get a foothold in the lucrative unless they open up and make full disclosure of their claims to Halal authenticity. Simply putting up a Halal label won't do.
